GIZ Egypt Advances Smart Water Management in Nile Delta to Boost Water and Food Security
Alexandria, Egypt — GIZ Egypt, working alongside the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR), is rolling out a smart, data-driven approach to water allocation aimed at tackling water scarcity and reinforcing Egypt’s long-term water and food security.
Background
Egypt’s Nile Delta remains one of the most water-stressed agricultural regions in the world, with rising demand, climate change pressures, and limited freshwater resources placing increasing strain on irrigation systems. To address these challenges, GIZ Egypt has been implementing the Nile Delta Water Management Programme (NDWM II) on behalf of the German Government, working in close cooperation with MALR and MWRI to modernize how water is allocated, monitored, and used across the region.
A key milestone in this effort was a collaborative planning workshop recently held in Alexandria, where government and programme partners came together to define strategic interventions for integrating real-time data, telemetry systems, and remote sensing technology into Egypt’s Irrigation System 2.0 — a next-generation framework designed to make water distribution more precise, responsive, and efficient.
