IWMI Launches Circular Bioeconomy Innovation Challenge 2026, Opens Applications for Indian Innovators

New Delhi, August 11, 2026 — The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has launched the Circular Bioeconomy Innovation Challenge 2026, inviting startups, entrepreneurs, and community-based innovators across India to submit scalable solutions that convert organic waste and underused resources into value. Selected finalists will have the opportunity to pitch their innovations at the World Circular Economy Forum 2026 (WCEF2026) in India, marking the challenge’s first connection to an international platform.

Background

India generates enormous volumes of food waste, wastewater, agricultural residues, and municipal solid waste each year — resources that largely remain trapped in linear systems of production and consumption rather than being reused or recovered. Left unaddressed, this represents a significant missed opportunity, with direct consequences for soil health, water quality, rural livelihoods, and long-term resource security.

The circular bioeconomy model offers an alternative approach, aiming to convert waste streams into valuable products such as biofuels, bioplastics, organic fertilizers, and bio-based chemicals. This concept has gained increasing traction in India as a pathway to sustainable development, resource efficiency, and rural economic opportunity.

The challenge was launched in partnership with the CGIAR Multifunctional Landscapes Program, BAIF Development Research Foundation (BAIF), IARI-Pusa Krishi, and the Circular Bioeconomy Innovation Hub. Speaking at the launch, Gopal Kumar, IWMI’s interim country representative for India and Bangladesh, described the circular bioeconomy as a core engine for achieving India’s long-term development vision of “Viksit Bharat (Developed India) @ 2047.” He pointed to the potential for converting organic waste, agricultural residues, and carbon emissions into clean energy, bioplastics, and bio-based chemicals, and highlighted the promise of a “waste-to-wealth” model that transforms municipal solid waste and crop residues into biofuels and organic fertilizers — boosting resource efficiency while creating new rural livelihood and enterprise opportunities.

A Challenge That Has Grown With Its Innovators

Now in its third year, the Circular Bioeconomy Innovation Challenge has evolved alongside India’s circular bioeconomy innovation landscape. The inaugural 2024 edition focused on students and early-career innovators, drawing more than 40 registrations, 15 shortlisted entries, and five finalists who participated in a two-day boot camp at BAIF’s Pune campus. That year’s ideas ranged from algae-based approaches to boosting biogas production to biodegradable materials made from agricultural waste and digital tools for food waste management.

By 2025, the focus had shifted toward early-stage startups with working prototypes or minimum viable products. Nine startups reached the jury stage, and four finalists completed a structured boot camp covering financial planning, investor pitching, and technical mentoring. That year’s winning innovation, from AlaCorp, featured an automated microalgae system capable of treating saline industrial wastewater while generating biomass for biofuel, bioplastics, and other high-value products. Other finalists worked on Black Soldier Fly-based waste processing, decentralized bio-resource centers, and energy-efficient composting — signaling solutions increasingly ready to move beyond the laboratory stage.

From Innovation to Investment

The 2026 edition builds on this momentum by connecting the challenge to an international stage for the first time. Top finalists will pitch their innovations at WCEF2026 in New Delhi, taking part in an accelerator session alongside innovators, experts, and potential investors.

Applications are invited under two categories:

  • Community-Led Rural Innovations
  • Youth and/or Women-Led Startups and Enterprises

Eligible applicants include startups and small rural enterprises established within the past 10 years, operating anywhere in India, with at least a minimum viable product addressing waste-to-value conversion, resource recovery and reuse, bio-based materials, organic waste management, renewable bioresources, or other nature-positive approaches. Community-based enterprises in rural areas, along with women and youth entrepreneurs from Tier I and Tier II Indian cities, are especially encouraged to apply.

Beyond the final pitch, finalists will receive scaling support to refine their innovations, explore new markets, and address intellectual property and commercialization needs. The top four finalists will also gain international visibility through the Global South Circular Bioeconomy Innovation Catalogue, along with access to incubation support through IARI-Pusa Krishi and BAIF’s Council for Advancement in Rural Entrepreneurship and Sustainability (CARES), plus mentorship through the Circular Bioeconomy Innovation Hub.

As it enters its third year, the Circular Bioeconomy Innovation Challenge reflects India’s growing momentum toward waste-to-value innovation and sustainable resource management. By linking finalists directly to the World Circular Economy Forum 2026 and offering structured pathways to scaling, investment, and international visibility, the initiative aims to accelerate the transition from early-stage ideas to commercially viable enterprises — supporting both environmental sustainability and rural economic development across India.
