UN-Water Previews Flagship Initiatives for Abu Dhabi Conference

UN-Water's 44th meeting in Rome previewed flagship initiatives for the 2026 UN Water Conference, from a "house for water" to a 100 Parties Initiative.

Rome, October 1–2, 2026 — UN-Water Members and Partners reviewed preparations for the 2026 UN Water Conference at the 44th UN-Water Meeting, held at IFAD headquarters. They discussed flagship initiatives to be launched across the Conference’s six interactive dialogues. The Conference takes place in Abu Dhabi from 8 to 10 December. The meeting was reported by IISD’s SDG Knowledge Hub.

Setting the Tone

UN-Water Chair Alvaro Lario called water a “super-connector” among vital systems. He said the 2026 SDG 6 Synthesis Report shows progress alongside persistent fragmentation, under-resourcing and uneven results. UN Special Envoy on Water Retno Marsudi named four tests for success: delivering action, placing water at the center of sustainable development, showing multilateralism can deliver, and setting a pathway for the future of water. Co-hosts Senegal and the UAE stressed implementation. The UAE highlighted work on a resolution to establish a regular UN Water Conference process, and Senegal called for stronger links between water, climate, biodiversity and food agendas.

Flagship Initiatives Previewed

  • Water in Multilateral Processes (Germany, Mexico): a “house for water” of regular, well-prepared conferences backed by negotiated political guidance, stronger UN delivery, coordinated financing and better follow-up.
  • Water for Cooperation (Finland, Zambia): a 100 Parties Initiative encouraging countries to join the UNECE Water Convention, plus a Basins for Cooperation initiative.
  • Water for Prosperity (China, Spain): integrated management, efficiency and circularity, and valuing water in finance and investment.
  • Water for People (Switzerland, Ghana): six workstreams, including rights-based approaches, services in fragile settings, better data and accountability, and targeted finance.
  • Investment for Water (France, South Africa): country platforms to coordinate water investment through political support, matchmaking and de-risking.
  • Water for Planet (Egypt, Japan): connecting water, environment and climate action, and responding to both scarcity and excess.

Members also previewed a permanent science panel, an Earth observation platform for water data, analysis of urban water in NDCs, and an Aqua Bonds Exchange linking projects to capital markets.

Beyond Abu Dhabi

Speakers wanted sanitation and hygiene threaded through the agenda, finance in every dialogue, and communication beyond the water community. One speaker raised a path toward a dedicated UN water organization. Participants placed the Conference in a longer sequence: the 11th World Water Forum in Saudi Arabia in March 2027, a preparatory meeting in New York in 2027, the 2028 UN Water Conference in Tajikistan, and the 2027 SDG Summit’s work on the post-2030 framework. The 45th UN-Water Meeting will be hosted by WMO in Geneva on 3–4 May 2027.

Conclusion

With about eight weeks to go, the Rome meeting shows the 2026 Conference taking shape as a launchpad for concrete initiatives rather than a single negotiated text. Whether those initiatives carry financing and accountability will decide whether Abu Dhabi marks a turning point or another round of pledges.
