Alternative “People’s Climate Summit” Planned in Antalya Alongside COP31

A call has gone out for a People’s Climate Summit (Halkların İklim Zirvesi) in Antalya, planned as an alternative to COP31, which runs 9–20 November. The Change the System, Not the Climate platform says 182 organisations are organising it, and it expects thousands of activists from South America, Africa, the Pacific, Asia, Europe and the Americas.

The programme

The People’s Climate March will take place on Saturday, 14 November, as a “Global Action Day.” Summit events run 15–18 November, each with a theme: Rights of Nature (15 November), Fossil Fuel Exit and Energy Democracy (16 November), Democracy, Anti-Militarism and Peace (17 November), and Food Sovereignty and Agroecology (18 November).

Free buses

With support from İklim Fest, the platform will run free buses to Antalya. People travelling by bus or on their own can apply through an online form. No departure points or times have been announced.

Background: the protest context

Türkiye’s Interior Ministry has delegated authority to approve demonstrations and marches in Antalya to the provincial governor’s office for one month. Climate Home News published an opinion piece today arguing that Türkiye and the UN should publicly guarantee that participants can speak, organise, report and protest peacefully. Whether the 14 November march gets approval is therefore a point to watch.

Conclusion

The People’s Climate Summit shows that parallel civil society events will run alongside the official negotiations. Organisers have given a clear schedule but few logistics. The platform’s announcement did not say where in Antalya events will be held, so readers should check the organisers’ channels.
