Pakistan’s Living Industries Initiative has been recognized by the United Nations as a flagship project for global ecosystem restoration.
ISLAMABAD, December 22 : Pakistan’s Living Industries Initiative has been selected as the flagship project of the United Nations Decade of Global Environmental Restoration for Ecosystem Restoration. This was announced by the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Inger Andersen in a letter to Pakistan’s Minister of Climate Change and Environment Coordination.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment Coordination on Friday, The Living Industries Initiative has the support of more than 70 governments around the world. It is a project to restore natural ecosystems over millions of hectares in the Indus River Basin, which has earned the prestigious recognition of supporting 90 percent of Pakistan’s population and economy.
Developed jointly by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment Coordination, provincial authorities and the UN system, the Living Industries Initiative represents a joint effort to improve the environmental conditions of the Indus Basin. Its overall approach focuses on addressing the environmental challenges facing the basin due to climate change with a set of 25 initiatives emphasizing nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based adaptation strategies.
Inger Andersen hailed the project as one of the world’s most promising, ambitious, and inspiring examples of large-scale restoration. This recognition reflects the tireless efforts of everyone involved in and supporting the project, the World Restoration Flagships, including the Living Industries Initiative, will be announced during the Sixth UN Environment Assembly in February 2024. This recognition is an important milestone for Pakistan, demonstrating its commitment to global environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
