Pakistan Investing in Sustainable Energy Solutions to Combat Climate Change: NA Speaker
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Monday said that Pakistan is deeply committed to combating climate change through significant measures including the promotion of renewable energy.
Addressing the inaugural session of the two-day meeting of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) on “Gender Empowerment and Green Economy”, in Islamabad, the National Assembly Speaker said the theme of gender equality and green economy is equally essential for a bright future.
As many as 15 Asian countries’ parliamentarians and others from Pakistan, the diplomatic community, high-level political figures, government officials, international non-governmental organisations (INGOs), members of international donor organisations, and academia participated in the event.
Ayaz Sadiq also reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to the Cairo International Conference for Population and Development Programme on its 30th anniversary being observed today. “Our dedication is reflected in legislative and policy measures being implemented in the country,” he said.
The NA Speaker said Pakistan’s Parliament has played a crucial role in advancing gender equality, reproductive health and sustainable development through progressive laws and dedicated parliamentary forums such as the Women Parliamentary Caucus, the Young Parliamentary Association, and the Child Caucus.
Ayaz Sadiq said the government also made legislation and laws, addressing gender-based violence, ensuring equal workplace and enhancing women’s socio-economic and political participation. He said through the protection of forests and enhancement of climate resilience, we are actively investing in a sustainable energy solution, implementing policy to preserve our vital forest cover.
The NA Speaker said as parliamentarians, they must recognize gender equality and the environment for suitability.
Ayaz Sadiq said the path to sustainable and inclusive development sans women empowerment and gender equality was elusive whereas the Parliament of Pakistan had championed critical legislation barring gender violence and supporting women empowerment in the country.
“The Parliament of Pakistan became the first public building for securing net metering license to promote green economy and renewables. The Speaker National Assembly’s residence and the Parliament building were first converted to solar energy when there was no public building with solar power in the country,” he mentioned.
The NA Speaker said, had prepared billions of rupees project for the solarization of Balochistan that would not only help reduce power leakages but also ensure renewable energy rollout in the biggest province of the country by territory.
