#Pakistan and #Tajikistan to Boost Mutual Cooperation to Harness #Hydropowers

ISLAMABAD: #Pakistan and #Tajikistan have signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements to boost mutual cooperation for the establishment of Institute of #Water Problems, #Hydropower and Technology of the Academy of Science Tajikistan and Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources.

The MoU was signed during a meeting of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Tajikistan president Emomali Rahmon, who is on a two-day official visit to Pakistan.

According to reports, Pakistan is facing a serious #watercrisis, and the country is rapidly moving from being classified as water “stressed” to water “scarce”—and with its annual water availability fall below 1,000 cubic metres per person, it may in fact have already crossed this threshold.

Numerous sources have found that Water scarcity is affecting the people of big cities, provinces, coastal communities, and small villages of Pakistan. Pakistan is placed 3rd by the IMF in the list of water scare countries. According to the World Bank sources, Pakistan is facing a poor water management issue and it cost the country 4% of its GDP.

Other cooperation MoUs include establishment of Sister Cities Relations, Customs Service of Tajikistan and Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), electronic data interchange, and academic cooperation between University of Peshawar and Tajik National University.

On the other hand, both states agreed to establish cooperation in industries and technology, transit trade, control of illicit trade of narcotics drugs by Tajik Drug Control Agency and Anti-Narcotics Force Pakistan, and psychotropic material. Dushanbe and Islamabad also agreed for cooperation between Tajikistan Agency of Standardization, Meteorology, Certification and Trade Inspection and Pakistan’s Standards and Quality Control Authority.
