China to Support Punjab Agriculture Against Climate Change Through Smart Farming
China has pledged technical support to help Punjab tackle climate change in agriculture through smart farming, mechanization, cotton research, and livestock cooperation.
Sun Yan has announced that Chinese experts will provide technical support to help Punjab’s agriculture sector tackle the growing impacts of climate change.
During a meeting at Agriculture House Punjab, the newly appointed Chinese Consul General said that cooperation with Punjab’s agriculture sector is among his top priorities. He added that China is ready to fully support the Punjab government in promoting smart agriculture and modern farming practices.
China to Help Punjab Address Climate Challenges
Speaking during his visit to Agriculture House Punjab, Sun Yan said that climate change has created major challenges for Punjab’s agriculture sector.
He stressed that Chinese experts can assist Punjab in areas such as:
- Smart agriculture
- Water-efficient irrigation systems
- Modern farm machinery
- Climate-resilient crop production
- Cotton seed research
- Livestock disease management
The meeting was attended by Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani, Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, Ahmed Aziz Tarar, and Naveed Asmat Kahloon.
Punjab Government Expanding Agricultural Support
Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani said that the Punjab government is implementing several initiatives to increase farm productivity under the leadership of the Chief Minister.
He revealed that:
- More than Rs200 billion in interest-free loans are being provided to 800,000 farmers through the Kisan Card program.
- Rs66 billion has been allocated for agricultural mechanization.
- Four Agri Malls are already operational.
- Ten additional Agri Malls are under construction.
- Around 10,000 super seeders are being distributed on subsidy to help reduce smog caused by crop burning.
The minister said these measures are helping farmers purchase agricultural inputs and improve crop yields.
Focus on Livestock and Frozen Meat Exports
Punjab officials also highlighted the need for China’s support in increasing frozen meat exports.
According to the provincial government, eight livestock compartments have been established for foot-and-mouth disease-free animals to improve export potential.
Officials believe that cooperation with China can help Punjab overcome export barriers and strengthen the livestock sector.
Agriculture Transformation Plan Gaining Momentum
Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani said that the Agriculture Transformation Plan introduced by the Punjab government is receiving a strong response from farmers.
Iftikhar Ali Sahoo added that the Punjab government has already strengthened ties with China through several agreements.
He noted that a high-level delegation from Punjab visited China in October 2025, where seven Memorandums of Understanding were signed to improve agricultural cooperation.
These agreements cover areas such as:
- Farm machinery manufacturing
- Smart agriculture
- Cotton seed development
- Germplasm research
- Livestock cooperation
Conclusion
China’s offer to support Punjab agriculture against climate change could play a major role in modernizing farming practices across the province.
With growing cooperation in smart agriculture, mechanization, irrigation, cotton research, and livestock development, Punjab may be better prepared to face the long-term impacts of climate change while improving food security and farmer incomes.
