Beijing: The top diplomats of world’s biggest emitters, USA and China, have pledged to work together to limit the Earth’s warming by enhancing climate cooperation amid rising geopolitical tensions and record-breaking heat waves gripping the three continents.
Climate Diplomacy was the key message shared by John Kerry, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate. He landed in Beijing for in-depth exchange of views on working together to address climate crisis.
I’ve just finished the first day of conversations in Beijing as the entire world is living the reality of daily record-breaking heat. The climate crisis demands that the world’s two largest economies work together to limit the Earth’s warming. We must take urgent action on a number of fronts, especially the challenges of coal and methane pollution”, John Kerry tweeted on Tuesday.
According to official sources, Kerry is scheduled to meet senior Chinese officials and the two sides are expected to hold an in-depth exchange of views on working together to address climate change.
To reinvigorate bilateral talks on matters of mutual interest, John Kerry, Washington’s top climate envoy, held talks with Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee.
John Kerry’s visit to China comes amid political tensions between the two countries on multiple fronts and is considered part of the bilateral efforts to improve diplomatic relations between Washington and Beijing, and hopes are that the world’s two largest carbon emitters can renew cooperation on climate change ahead of a key summit, #COP28 in UAE, in November,2023.
Also, John Kerry’s visit to Beijing is a follow-up visit of the U.S. Secretary of State and Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, to China and held meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on July 7th, 2023.
Earlier in June2023, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded a long visit to China to normalize the tensions between the two rival superpowers.
