Islamabad: World Water Day 2025 was celebrated across the world, including Pakistan, to create awareness and understanding about the depleting water resources, leading to water scarcity.

Every year, UN-Water — the UN’s coordination mechanism on water and sanitation — sets the theme for World Water Day. In 2023, the focus was on Accelerating Change. In 2024, on Leveraging Water for Peace. In 2025, the theme was Glacier Preservation.

World Water Day, held on 22 March every year since 1993, is an annual United Nations Observance focusing on the importance of freshwater.

World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis.

Also, a core focus global water awareness campaign, #WorldWaterDay, is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

  • Glaciers: Earth’s frozen water towers

According reports, some 70% of the world’s freshwater is stored in glaciers which slowly release water to sustain rivers and communities—but climate change is making them melt faster than ever.

  • Protecting glaciers is protecting our future.

The United Nations (UN) said the global demand for fresh water will exceed supply by 40 per cent by 2030.

According to reports, some four billion people — almost two thirds of the world’s population — experience severe water scarcity for at least one month each year. #2 Over two billion people live in countries where water supply is inadequate. #3 Half of the world’s population could be living in areas facing water scarcity by as early as 2025.
