Several groundbreaking hydel projects in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are nearing completion, ensuring economic stability and industrial growth.

PESHAWAR: Several hydel projects in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are in their final stages of completion, marking a significant milestone for the province’s energy sector. The Secretary of Energy and Power, Muhammad Zubair Khan, highlighted that these projects will play a crucial role in boosting the province’s economy and ensuring energy self-sufficiency.

Hydel Energy Projects to Strengthen KP’s Economy

The completion of these hydel projects is vital for stabilizing the province’s economy and advancing industrial development. Government officials are actively engaging with high-level forums to resolve any obstacles hindering progress, ensuring timely execution.

Major Hydel Projects Nearing Completion

The Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organisation (PEDO) is leading these efforts, aiming to become the province’s most profitable energy institution. Several hydropower projects are progressing rapidly, including:

  • Balakot, Mansehra: 300 MW
  • Madyen, Swat: 157 MW
  • Gabral, Kalam: 88 MW
  • Matiltan, Swat: 84 MW
  • Lawi, Chitral: 69 MW
  • Koto, Dir: 40.8 MW
  • Krora, Shangla: 11.8 MW
  • Chapri Charkhel, Kurram: 10.5 MW
  • Mujahideen Power Project, Torghar: 6.9 MW

These projects will collectively generate 778 MW of electricity, increasing the province’s revenue by Rs 45 billion annually.

Expanding Solar Energy Initiatives in KP

In addition to hydel power projects, the provincial government is focusing on large-scale solar energy initiatives. Project Director Solar, Engr Asfandyar, detailed ambitious plans to solarize key facilities, including:

  • 8,000 schools
  • 5,762 mosques
  • 6,650 households
  • 187 primary health units
  • Chief Minister’s Secretariat and Civil Secretariat offices

Mega Solarization Projects Underway

The KP Chief Minister recently inaugurated two flagship solar projects worth Rs 55 billion:

  • 13,000 Government Buildings: Rs 20 billion allocated for solar conversion.
  • 130,000 Households: Rs 35 billion allocated for residential solar installations within two years.

The free solar scheme has already received over 1 million applications, highlighting strong public interest in renewable energy solutions.

Government’s Commitment to Timely Project Completion

At the conclusion of the PEDO review meeting, Secretary Muhammad Zubair Khan expressed confidence in PEDO’s performance. However, he issued a strict directive to ensure that all hydel energy projects are completed within their stipulated timelines.
