Pakistan’s Canal System along Indus River Highlighted at Canal Cities Forum in China

Beijing: Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, Moin ul Haque highlighted Pakistan’s canal system along the Indus River, which is among the largest in the world irrigating over 48 million acres, for the Chinese audience here on Monday.

Ambassador was briefing the local and global participants attending the opening ceremony of the World Canal Cities Forum held in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, China.

World Canal Cities Forum was held to promote the role of canals as conduits of commerce, culture and connectivity.

Emphasizing the significance of massive canal system of Pakistan, its irrigation structure, its’ contribution for agriculture and national economy, ambassador showed keen interest in joining the organization to promote bilateral cooperation for agriculture development in Pakistan.

Expressing his sentiments about the scenic landscapes and rich culture of Yangzhou, he acknowledged the historic importance of China’s Yangzhou as a major city along the Grand Canal.

Also, Ambassador expressed his deep admiration for the developmental strengths of Yangzhou and highlighted his desire for learning from the Chinese developmental model, which had improved the lifestyles of the Chinese people starting from grassroot level.

Recalling the already existing sister-province relationship between Jiangsu and Punjab, he underlined the need for practical and result-oriented sister city relationship with Yangzhou.

Ambassador also met with Ms. Lili Zu, Party Secretary of Jiangdu district in Yangzhou and conveyed his appreciation for Jiangdu’s socio-economic development, and discussed ways to establish friendly relations and cooperative partnerships.

Envoy met with Wang Jinjian, Party Secretary of Yangzhou city in Jiangsu, China and lauded Yangzhou’s experience (as a city along the Grand Canal) in areas of irrigation, ecological protection and industrialization, has a number of lessons for Pakistan.
