Beijing: The the world’s first hydrogen-powered smart tram, developed by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) is being exported to Malaysia for urban transport services in Kuching city, capital of Sarawak in Malaysia.

According to the China Railway sources, the smart tram operates on hydrogen energy power system, which has the advantages of longer driving range and shorter refueling time, as well as energy saving and environmental protection.

The tram has been upgraded through intelligent design, which is in line with the needs of Malaysia in achieving a zero-emission and intelligent public transport system.

After arriving in Malaysia, the tram will be tested in Kuching for three months, according to the company.

The successful deployment of the smart tram in Malaysia will effectively alleviate the traffic congestion in Kuching, bringing a reliable, efficient and modern mode of travel to the locals. It will also help China’s smart manufacturing serve the countries along the Belt and Road.

The tram is an excellent model to showcase green hydrogen transport development in China and a move towards reducing emissions.

According a report published by the Green Belt and Road Initiative Center, 61 hydrogen filling stations have been constructed in China between 2017 and 2020. The first hydrogen fuel cell tram was developed in 2017, and a crewed hydrogen-powered aircraft was successfully tested in 2019.
