First International Conference on “Arid Zone Biodiversity” to be held at SAU Sub-University Campus –
HYDERABAD: The first international conference on ‘Arid Zone Biodiversity’ will begin on Tuesday at Sindh Agriculture University Sub Campus Umerkot, where national and international experts will present their papers on arid agriculture, climate change, production of medicinal plants, livestock, agriculture, arid ecosystems of the region and cultivation of low water crops and utilization of available agricultural resources in Thar.
The conference will continue for two days on March 7 and 8, where various sessions will be held, and experts in agriculture, animal husbandry, climate and water issues will present their research and in particular the ecosystem of the desert region in the province.
The various meetings will include a conference on camels, discussions and papers on the Haakro river ecosystem, bird habitats, organic agriculture, food security, climate resilient crops and animals.
The conference will be inaugurated in the new academic block at the Sindh Agricultural University campus by the Chairman Higher Education Commission Islamabad Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman Sindh University Council Dr. SM Tariq, Vice-Chancellor SAU Dr. Fateh Marri, Chairman of Agriculture Pakistan. The Research Council of Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Ali, and FAO Sindh Office Chief Dr. James Okoth.
On this occasion, the director of METAMETA Dr. Frank Van Steenburgen, CEO of Thadeep Dr. Sono Kangharani, former vice chancellor of Mehran University Dr. Muhammad Aslam Uqaili and other guests participate, while the Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jan Muhammad Marri will report on it. about the conference.
In the group discussions, technical and parliamentary sessions, Sindh Assembly Member Qasim Siraj Soomro, Shah Abdul Latif University Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto, former vice chancellor of NED University of Karachi Dr. Ali Raza Bhatti, Vice Chancellor, Lasbela University Lasbela University. Agriculture Water and Marine Science Othal Balochistan Dr. Dost Mohammad Baloch, Vice Chancellor of Begum Nusrat Bhutto Women’s University Sukkur Dr. Tahmina Mangan, Director Livestock Sindh Dr. Nazir Hussain Kalhoro, former Vice Chancellor Dr. Bekharam Devrajani, Director of Agriculture Extension Hidayatullah Chhajro, R. Edward Freeman from University of Virginia, USA, Prof. Antonio Daood, from University of Sussex, England, Scholar Noor Ahmed Jhanjhi, Noor Muhammad Bajeer, Writer Mumtaz Bukhari, Deans, Heads of Departments, many experts from Pakistan and abroad will present their papers.
Provincial Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony of this conference, while a large number of local and international experts including Vice Chancellor Dr. Fateh Marri, national professor Dr. Bhawani Shankar, and Director of Agricultural Research Noor. Muhammad Baloch will participate.
Through this conference, recommendations regarding various sectors, including dry agriculture, will be handed over to the federal and Sindh governments, which will open new doors of development with important proposals for the promotion of deserts in the country, including Thar.
