Due to the climate crisis, precious human lives are lost, the fruits of development are wasted

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has said that due to the severe impact of natural disasters in Pakistan, precious lives have been lost and the benefits of development have also been lost.

According to a report published in Dawn newspaper, UNEP has said in its report that in order to deal with the effects of the climate crisis, the country should understand, identify and attribute its negative effects to specific factors related to climate change.

The report titled Adaptation Gap Report 2023: Under-Financed, Under-Prepared—In Adequate Investment and Planning states that these initiatives will help Pakistan build capacity and build resilience.

The UN agency released the report ahead of the COP28 climate talks to be held in Dubai later this month.

The report, released in November, also includes a case study on ‘Cascading Impacts and Flooding: Capacity Building in Pakistan’, which will be released soon.

UNEP says the increasing number, scale and severity of climate crisis impacts means that with each climate disaster, the ability to rebuild becomes less and less effective.

It warns that progress on climate change adaptation is slowing down on all fronts when it should accelerate to address the growing risks of climate change.

It should be noted that in a report released last month, the World Bank said that natural disasters have affected more than 7.5 million Pakistanis in the last 3 decades and the losses due to it are estimated at 29 billion dollars or about a billion dollars annually.

The World Bank report said that the potential increase in temperature extremes will exacerbate the negative impacts on human health, livelihoods and ecosystems that Pakistan is already experiencing.
