Rawalpindi: The United Nations Military Adviser Gen Birame Diop has expressed his grief over the destruction caused by floods in Pakistan due to climate change and offered condolence to the families of the victims. He also assured full UN support for the affectees.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Gen Birame Diop stated while meeting Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa during his ongoing visit to the United States and discussed diverse matters, including the overall regional security, the military’s public affairs wing said in a statement on Sunday.

The top military officials discussed the matters of mutual interest as well as the devastation caused by floods in #Pakistan.

The army chief appreciated the role of Gen Diop — who is from Senegal — in promoting core values of the United Nations and its response during the disaster in the country.

“Gen Diop also acknowledged Pakistan’s contribution in UN peacekeeping Missions and extraordinary achievements in counter terrorism,” the ISPR added.

According to local media, the army chief reached the US on Friday for an almost week-long visit, which includes meetings with senior officials of the Biden administration.

The meeting comes at a time Pakistan government decided to take an additional $600 million from the UN for rehabilitation and recovery from devastating floods.

It should be remembered that due to the recent heavy rains in Pakistan, 992 thousand 871 houses have been damaged and 727 thousand 144 agricultural animals have died.

The UN has already provided $160 million but the grant was not considered enough in the face of the unprecedented devastation.

After receiving the additional $600 million, the UN aid amount will reach $760 million in total.

The UN has said that the number of people in need of help in flood-hit areas is much higher than what has been reported. #Egypt
