Chinas’ Total Capacity of Renewable Energy Reaches about 2.71 billion Kilowatts in 2023 says NEA

Beijing: Green transition initiatives of China are seen highly successful as the country makes robust growth in the installed capacity of renewable energy in 2023 and the total capacity of renewable energy reached about 2.71 billion kilowatts (kw) in the first half of 2023, according to a report by National Energy Administration (NEA).

China Energy Investment Corporation (China Energy), the world’s largest coal-fired power generation giant, has announced a significant accomplishment in its installed clean and renewable energy capacity.

By the end of August 2023, China Energy’s total installed clean energy capacity was 100.14 million kilowatts, passing a remarkable milestone in its efforts to transition toward cleaner energy sources, according to the company.

The energy giant’s total installed electricity capacity has reached an unprecedented level of 303.49 million kilowatts, the company stated.

By the end of August 2023, the share of clean and renewable energy in China Energy’s total installed capacity has risen from 25.8 percent in 2020 to an impressive 33 percent, with an average annual growth rate of 2.7 percentage points, data from China Investment shows.

China Energy’s coal-fired power capacity is currently 203.34 million kilowatts and its wind power capacity is 55.46 million kilowatts, with both maintaining their top positions globally in terms of scale, the company said.

China’s surging installed renewable energy capacity of 1.32 billion kilowatts

China’s installed capacity of renewable energy reached about 1.32 billion kilowatts in the first half of 2023, rising 18.2 percent compared with the same period last year.

The figure accounts for 48.8 percent of China’s total power generation capacity, historically surpassing the installed capacity of coal-based power.

In a breakdown, the installed capacity of wind power expanded 13.7 percent year on year to 389 million kilowatts, while that of solar power stood at about 470 million kilowatts, representing a yearly increase of 39.8 percent.

China’s installed power generation capacity totaled about 2.71 billion kilowatts, rising 10.8 percent year on year, the NEA stated.

China has enhanced its renewable energy investment over the years as part of its pursuit of green development.

In the first six months of 2023, the total investment of China’s major power companies in solar energy soared 113.6 percent year on year to 134.9 billion yuan (about $18.8 billion), NEA’s data showed.
