IWMI Brings AI, Water Quality and Nature-Based Finance to Cairo Water Week 2026

IWMI is taking part in five technical sessions at Cairo Water Week 2026, covering AI for water-food systems, water quality and climate resilience.

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is taking part in five technical sessions at this year’s Cairo Water Week, held 25–29 October under the theme “water as a catalyst for peace, shared prosperity and a sustainable planet.” IWMI says it will highlight how science, innovation, digital technologies and integrated approaches can support more resilient water systems. Topics include AI and digital tools for water and food security, water quality and health risks, water reuse, circular economy approaches and nature-based solutions.

IWMI’s sessions

On Monday, 26 October, IWMI ran a session on AI for resilient water-food systems and another on water quality and health risks in the Arab region. On Wednesday, 28 October, IWMI is involved in a plenary session on harnessing AI and the digital wave for water resources sustainability. The ICARDA programme confirms that the AI and water-food systems session was organised by IWMI.

Background: the event

The ninth Cairo Water Week runs 25–29 October with 114 technical and scientific sessions and 11 ministers and special envoys confirmed. Participating organisations include FAO, UNESCO, IWMI, GIZ and the World Water Council. The programme includes a final preparatory session for the 2026 UN Water Conference.

Why it matters

AI and digital tools are a growing theme in water management, and IWMI’s sessions pair them with food systems and quality, two areas where data gaps are common in the Arab region. IWMI’s presence also links Cairo Water Week to the wider run-up to the UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi in December.

Conclusion

IWMI’s role at Cairo Water Week shows the institute’s focus on practical, data-driven water solutions. The week ends tomorrow, and the outcomes of the AI plenary and the UN Water Conference preparatory session are worth following.
