COMSTECH to Host Online Seminar on Climate-Resilient Smart Cities on August 20

Islamabad: The OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) has announced an online seminar titled “Building Climate Resilient Smart Cities for a Sustainable Future,” scheduled to be held on August 20, 2026. The seminar is being organized under COMSTECH’s Forum on Environment and Ecosystem Restoration (CFEER), reflecting growing international concern over the compounding threats that climate change and rapid urbanization pose to cities across the globe.

The initiative comes at a critical juncture as urban centers worldwide, particularly in developing and OIC member countries, grapple with the twin pressures of expanding populations and intensifying climate impacts, ranging from extreme heat and flooding to resource scarcity and infrastructure strain.

According to COMSTECH, the seminar has been convened specifically to address the ways in which climate change and unplanned urban growth are jointly undermining the sustainability and resilience of cities. Rapid urbanization, when not accompanied by adequate planning, infrastructure investment, and environmental safeguards, tends to amplify vulnerabilities to climate-related shocks such as flooding, heatwaves, and water insecurity, challenges that are increasingly visible across major urban centers in the Global South, including many cities within OIC member states.
