8 Irrigation Dams Completed in K-P: Boosting Agriculture and Water Conservation
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa completes 8 irrigation dams, enhancing agriculture and water conservation. Learn about the impact and future plans.

PESHAWAR:
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has successfully completed the construction of eight small irrigation dams, significantly boosting the province’s agricultural sector and water conservation efforts. Minister for Irrigation Aqib Ullah Khan announced the milestone during his visit to Jaroba Dam in Nowshera on Monday. He stated that the newly completed Jaroba Dam will make 930 acres of barren land cultivable, directly benefiting local farmers and improving water supply.
A Major Step Towards Sustainable Water Management
The completion of these irrigation dams marks a significant achievement for the K-P Irrigation Department, which has been working diligently to enhance water storage and distribution across the province. The department has expedited efforts to construct a total of 36 small dams, with work progressing rapidly on the remaining projects.
Key Highlights of the Completed Dams:
- Jaroba Dam (Nowshera) – Provides irrigation to 930 acres.
- Other small dams strategically built to improve water access and boost agriculture.
- Water conservation measures implemented to tackle water scarcity.
- Agricultural productivity expected to rise significantly in the coming years.
Government’s Commitment to Agricultural Development
Minister Aqib Ullah Khan emphasized that these dams are crucial for ensuring sustainable water supply to rural communities. He added that the initiative aligns with the government’s vision to enhance food security, support farmers, and combat drought conditions in arid areas.
“We are committed to completing the remaining dams on time. These projects will not only benefit farmers but also contribute to groundwater recharge and climate resilience,” said the minister.
Economic and Environmental Benefits of the Irrigation Dams
The development of irrigation dams in K-P is expected to yield numerous benefits, including:
1. Enhanced Agricultural Output
- Increased irrigation capacity will boost crop yield and food production.
- Previously barren lands will now be utilized for farming, providing economic benefits to local farmers.
2. Water Conservation and Management
- Improved water storage reduces dependence on seasonal rainfall.
- Helps in reducing water wastage and improving groundwater levels.
3. Climate Resilience
- Efficient water use can mitigate drought conditions.
- Reduces soil erosion and enhances ecosystem stability.
Future Plans: 36 Dams Under Construction
The K-P government is actively working on constructing 28 more irrigation dams, with an overall goal of completing 36 small dams within the planned timeframe. These projects are being executed with the help of modern engineering techniques to ensure long-term sustainability.
“The rapid pace of construction demonstrates our commitment to agriculture, food security, and climate resilience. The new dams will continue to empower local communities,” Khan added.
Conclusion: A Transformational Initiative
The completion of eight small irrigation dams in K-P is a major milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to achieve agricultural self-sufficiency and water security. With work continuing on additional projects, the province is set to witness a significant transformation in its irrigation infrastructure.
